People are watching more television and movies today than ever, and they are doing it in much more innovative and convenient ways. In fact, by using a Home Theater Personal Computer (HTPC) they can watch virtually any show they want at a time which is convenient for them. A good HTPC will allow the user to store movies and television shows for viewing at a later time. They can also function just like a DVR from your cable or satellite company so you can save money by avoiding the monthly charge to rent them.
HTPC is a fairly general term which can be used to describe any computer which you hook up to your television or projection system to watch movies or other videos. You can choose to have a dedicated box which was designed specifically for this use, or you can use a regular PC which serves as both your home theater PC and a regular family PC. Technically you can even use a gaming system such as the PS3 or X-box 360 as an HTPC.
Finding the right option for you is not likely as difficult as you might think. As long as your computer is able to generate video at a high resolution rate and output it to your television, you can use it as an HTPC. When using a traditional computer in this role you’ll need to get some software to allow remote control use and possibly even options to record video from live TV if you want to use it in place of a DVR system. XBMC or Windows Media Center work well for this.
Many people prefer to simply purchase a computer that was designed specifically for this type of use because it will be very easy to hook up, and it will come with all the tools and applications required to easily watch television. A dedicated HTPC is well worth the investment for most people since it saves them a lot of time and stress in setting it up and getting it to work properly.
