Movies-By-Mail Trials and Tribulations

Let’s face it. These days we have become lazy. We just want to come home from a long week of work, sit back, have a nice ice cold cola (with whiskey of course), and watch some pretty, flashy images dance upon the screen. Traditionally, we would drive down to the local video store, walk around for thirty minutes or so debating with significant other over whether we should get the newest sappy love story or Rambo 7000, the new high-octane action thriller where Stallone takes on ALIENS, and finally heading home with something less than satisfactory. Today, this is morphed into a whole other experience with the new love child of video stores and the interwebs. Enter “Movies-By-Mail.”

There are two main contenders in the “movies-by-mail” arena these days; Netflix and Blockbuster. Both offer, generically, the same services and system. You pay them a monthly fee and they mail your movies straight to your door! How much better can it get!? Well not only do they mail them to you free, they also pay for you to mail them back. If you’re the impatient type, you don’t even have to wait for the movie to be mailed to you. A growing number of titles are being made available via instant streaming straight to your TV, game console, or even computer. Ahhh, the beauty of the internet……Thank you, Al Gore!

Well both of these major players, Blockbuster and Netflix, offer a free trial period for anyone interested in taking their service for a test drive down the information superhighway. I will be signing up for a trial account at both services and then detailing my thoughts and experiences of each. Check back in a week or so for my review of the top two contenders for your entertainment dollars.
